"The blood of Jesus
Christ cleanses us from all sin." 1 John 1:17.
The verse says,
"cleanses" not "will cleanse." There are so many people who
think of this offer as a dying hope as they look forward to
the pardon promised. It is far better, of course, to have
cleansing now then to depend on the bare possibility of
forgiveness when you are about to die.
Some imagine that an
assurance of pardon can be realized only after many years of
Christian experience. But forgiveness of sin is a "present"
thing- a privilege for this day, a joy from this very hour.
The moment a sinner trusts Jesus, he is fully forgiven.
The text, being written
in the present tense, also indicates continuance: it was
"cleanses" yesterday, it is "cleanses" today, it will be
"cleanses" tomorrow: it will always be true for you until
death- you may come every hour to this fountain because it
keeps on cleansing. Notice also, the completeness of the
cleansing. "The blood of Jesus Christ, His Son, cleanses us
from all sin" -not only from one sin, but "from all sin."
Many are your sins against God.
Whether what you owe is
little or great, the same payment can satisfy the one as the
other. The blood of Jesus Christ is as total a payment for
the sin of blaspheming Peter as for the shortcomings of
loving John. Our sin is gone, all gone immediately, and all
gone forever. What a wonderful theme to dwell on at the end
of catch day.
